"Hercules Bodybuilding System" is an amazingly detailed layout of a plan to develop large body and muscle size using exclusively a body weight program. The book is well written. The pictures are motivational with lots of posing images of famous body builders from Paul Wynter to Steve Reeves to Robert Kennedy and many more. Careful mention is made of those who used the principles in this book. Most of the exercises are pure bodyweight. Some supports, such as chairs, are expected, but there are no barbells, dumbbells, kettle bells, or club bells in any of the illustrations or instructions. Weight training is mentioned, but with warnings not to over develop the chest, shoulders and thighs, giving imbalance in physique.Originally this was a 12 lesson course mailed out with a new lesson every two weeks. Here all 12 lessons are gathered into one book. The lessons are well and clearly described and well illustrated by muscular male models in posing briefs. There is much extra material on sex, stopping smoking, hygiene, tooth care, hair care, diet (the high fat, high protein of traditional body builders), weight loss and other issues of interest to men. There are even directions for such advanced exercises as one hand stands. Safety warnings are abundant and accurate. The extra material is all very standard male grooming and hygiene techniques, and while for many overkill, right on for the man who wants to pose and be eye candy.
On starting to read this book, I had to go back and check the copyright date, and the dates on the famous body builders pictured. Initially I thought I was reading a historical text. The release date of this version is Jan 2013. The book is very traditional in approach to body building except that it utilizes body weight exercises exclusively. The book uses high numbers of reps and high numbers of sets to achieve pumping of the muscles. Yes, it will work. And can be done at home, on vacation, or anywhere else. No gym required.
For the man who wants to train for the large well proportioned body valued by body builders, this is one approach that will work. The instructions are detailed, complete and clear. The pictures are motivational toward the well muscled mam. My only complaint is the small size of the print and that I could not seem to enlarge the font much on my iPad. Otherwise, a very well done book.
