Raised among humans, Ori Jones only discovered he was an avian shifter six months ago. Unable to complete a full shift until he reaches his avian maturity, he still can't be sure of his exact species.

But with species comes rank, and rank is everything to the avians. When a partial shift allows the elders to announce that they believe Ori to be a rather ugly little duckling, he drops straight to the bottom rung of their hierarchy.

Life isn't easy for Ori until he comes to the attention of a high ranking hawk shifter. Then the only question is, is Ori really a duck - and what will his new master think when the truth eventually comes out?

Duck! (Audible Audio Edition) Kim Dare Rod M Maskew Audible Studios Books

The title made me think this would be an amusing comedy. The "Free Sample" made me expect a Cinderella story. Once you get past the first chapter this is 100% pure homoerotic bondage erotica. Not romance (unless you are a psychopath), not a realistic portrayal of the BDSM scene. That's fine if that is what you want. All semblance of a plot was abandoned pretty early on. I was a little disappointed...and I'm not someone who typically gets worked up over an occasional sex scene.

It was amusing to finally meet a shifter who wasn't an alpha...most urban fantasy/paranormal romance pastiches make a big production over how dominant the shifter character is. It feels as if there may have an original rough draft of this that the author decided was too rapey...the story seems to start out with some dubious consent but has scenes grafted on that seem to exist largely to establish consent.
It is a little problematic to combine extreme "Master Slave" dynamic out of S&M with a class based society and a character considered a minor by the rules of his society (although NOT by ours). The extreme BDSM elements undermine the semblance of a plot. If the Dom didn't go quite so far it could be a "rescuing from slavery/abuse" story that would have worked better.

Duck! (Audible Audio Edition) Kim Dare Rod M Maskew Audible Studios Books Reviews

Did not like this book at all, found it after reading Axel's Pup (which I loved, especially for the way it handled BDSM, actually I loved that book so much I even bought a copy for a friend and recommened to everyone) and hoped it will be similar, but this was so different I was surprised the author is the same. The dom/master does not explain anything to the sub, there's no safeword or discussions where the couple (it's hard to even call them a couple) talk about what they want from the relationship and their future, Ori was so child-like in his actions and thoughts, their relationship felt borderline creepy, I know he is legal in the book, but it was hard to read it and imagine him as an adult since he acted and processed events and things in his mind like a child would. And Raynard just seemed like a selfish jerk, it never felt like he sees Ori as his equal, so I did not want to root for him or their relationship at all. And everyone else in the book was a jerk as well, what kind of world is this? I struggled through the book hoping it will turn better or characters will get more dimensions and growth, but it never happened, was glad when it finally ended.

The only reason I gave more than one star - the premise of this book was good, the avian shifters, the "ugly duckling" twist, even the way they met and got together could have been amazing. Could have.
I have read Kim Dare since she first started publishing, and she was one of the first authors that drew me to the M/M genre. This is a second edition and release of "Duck", which I originally purchased in 2012. It was one of her first (in my opinion) full length novels. It was originally posted with another book on her website "With a Kiss" as part of the series Fairy Tale Retelling's. She later wrote a second novel to the Avian Shifter "Magpie" which follows Everett from "Duck". She currently posted on her website stating that she is reworking it and is hopefull for a re-release later this year. Owning both original releases I have to say "Magpie" was an amazing follow up to "Duck" and was incredibly happy to see Ori and Raynard make a appearance. But I was also a little upset that it wasn't explicitly mentioned that it was a re-release, and the only place it is mentioned is under the publisher. I am a true Kim Dare fan and am anxious to read anything she puts out so when I saw this posting I was initially confused. While I chose to purchase the second edition I thought it wasn't exactly cool if someone didn't want to not realizing they already owned the first.

As far as "Duck" goes I have to say it is absolutely one of my favorites and is one I go back and re-read often. It is one that is great as a starter novel of sorts. If you never really read M/M BDSM novels it is a great place to start. It focuses on the core of that genre TRUE SUBMISSION AND DOMINATION without overtly kinky scenes. Above all it is an excellent love story.

While I love "Duck" and think it is absolutely top notch, Kim Dare absolutely dazzles in her recent release "Axel's Pup" and I am anxiously awaiting the release of the second in the series, While it dips further into kink it is also incredibly tasteful and well written. If end up enjoying her as a writer I also hole-heartedly recommend her "Thrown to the Lions" and "Pack Discipline" series both are excellent. Just be for warned they are quite a bit shorter than "Duck"/"Magpie"/"Axel's Pup".
I don't mind BDSM and when it's written in a way I feel is realistic I really enjoy it. I did have a few problems with this one. I felt like Reynard didn't always take care of Ori the way a dom should. I also had a bit of a problem with feeling like Ori was more just happy that someone was giving him affection and it was more gratitude then love. With his background of so many foster care families and his abuse at the nest he just wanted someone to care for him and any positive attention is something that he would latch on to. Unfortunately, because of this I never really felt like Ori loved Reynard.

I admit I hated the whole class system especially the fact that the lower classes seemed to much like slaves. I hated the bullying that went on and never felt like their was any changes even when they discovered just how wrong they were about Ori.

I did like the ending though and the way the whole thing was resolved between Ori and Reynard.
